Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - October 25, 1993 Page - 2 - <br /> PRESENTATIONS (continued) <br /> - Individual -- Susan Riskind-Poulsen. Founder of the "Fresh Food <br /> Project, " which provides fresh food to those in need, will be <br /> present to accept the Award. <br /> Susan Riskind-Poulsen said the bulk of the thanks should go to the <br /> volunteers who pick up the 1 ,000 pounds per week of produce and take it <br /> to the Davis Street Center. She congratulated the Optimist volunteers, <br /> Rose Johnson and Howard Kitzman, and the people in the community in San <br /> Leandro who make the program possible. <br /> - Organization -- Davis Street Community Center. For the Center's <br /> Work in providing food for those in need. Rose Johnson, Director of <br /> Davis Street Community Center, will be present to accept the Award. <br /> Rose Johnson accepted the Award on behalf of the Davis Street Community <br /> Center. She said receipt of the Award is really an honor. She said <br /> last month the Center served food to 223 people. She said they <br /> appreciate the support from Kraft, the "Fresh Food Project, " but most <br /> particularly, from everyone in the community. <br /> 5. PUBLIC COMMENTS Public Comments are limited to 3 minutes per person. <br /> A. Rick Richards, 335 Peralta Avenue, noted that the "Alzheimer's Memory <br /> Walk" for 1993 is anticipated to bring in over $65,000 in pledges. <br /> B. Tina Schaeffer, 760 Barri Drive, said she is a parent whose child goes <br /> to James Monroe School . She spoke regarding the cuts in crossing-guard <br /> hours. She said Monroe School has a great parent team willing to <br /> volunteer and do whatever is necessary to raise money or increase hours <br /> for the crossing guards. She noted the San Lorenzo Unified School <br /> District has provided funds to pay for an extra hour for the crossing <br /> guards. She said many San Leandro Unified School District parents <br /> would also be willing to pay. <br /> Mayor Faria said he and staff would be happy to meet with Ms. Schaeffer <br /> and other parents to talk about what could be done. <br /> Council Members Corbett and Perry said the Partnership for Youth Safety <br /> Committee, as well as the School Liaison Committees, would also be <br /> interested in meeting with parents and suggested that interested <br /> parents attend the Partnership for Youth Safety meeting on November 30. <br /> C. Michael Sykert Starry, Member of the Dad's Club at James Monroe School , <br /> said he appreciates the City Council 's comments and said the Dad's Club <br /> would be interested in helping through matching funds, etc. He said <br /> two crossing guards, Verna Corham and Frank Garritch, have been <br /> particularly important to the children, and he would like to see them <br /> remain. <br />
