Matter of Proposed Business License Tax Increase.
This being the time and place for the Public Hearing on the above
matter, John Jermanis, Finance Director, said this rate structure has
been in effect since 1987 and is adjusted annually based upon increases
in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) , which this year is 3%. He said the
increase in unit fees would range from 25 to 75 cents and the basic fee
would increase $1 .00. He said San Leandro remains on a flat rate
business license, unlike most other cities. He described the two
actions needed tonight. He said the Chamber of Commerce and the
Manufacturers' Association were aware of the proposed increases.
In response to Council questions, he said the private utilities in San
Leandro are Pacific Bell and PG&E. He described the pro-rata fee
schedule for businesses started in the second half of the year.
The Hearing was then opened to the public.
