Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - January 18, 1994 Page - 15 - <br /> 9. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> A. Council Member Corbett thanked the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce for <br /> the excellent Installation Dinner. <br /> B. Council Member Corbett said the Governor's State of the State speech <br /> stressed the importance of controlling crime. She said she hopes he <br /> remembers how important it is to fund cities so they can control crime. <br /> She said she hopes the State will see the big picture and preserve <br /> cities' funding. <br /> C. Council Member Kerr paid his respects to the people of Los Angeles who <br /> lost lives and property. He said this emphasizes what needs to be done <br /> toward earthquake preparation. He said he is on the Disaster <br /> Preparedness Committee and is glad to see measures moving forward. He <br /> said he also has been in contact with the Police Department regarding <br /> a Town Hall Meeting in April dealing with crime, and he would like to <br /> include earthquake preparation. He said people in the community need <br /> to be involved so they can help the Police Department. <br /> D. Council Member Perry said the earthquake brought back a lot of memories <br /> and feelings of helplessness. She said people need to prepare <br /> themselves and be self-sufficient. She said the City of San Leandro <br /> has provided a lot of public information and education. <br /> E. Council Member Perry said she attended the Library presentation for <br /> Martin Luther King, Jr. , Day and said it was a very innovative, <br /> intergenerational program. <br /> F. Council Member Perry said she attended the League of California Cities <br /> Financial Information and the East Bay Division presentation regarding <br /> the Governor's proposed budget. She said there are a lot of fabricated <br /> numbers in it, and his message is not reality. She said this will <br /> probably be the third year of take-aways and realignments of social <br /> services to counties and cities. She said she would provide the City <br /> Council with the various proposals for restructuring. <br /> G. Council Member Nahm said everyone should find their "No Unfunded ° <br /> Mandates" buttons because the Governor's message indicates there will <br /> be a cataclysmic impact on cities. <br /> H. Council Member Nahm congratulated the City Council and staff regarding <br /> the policy and procedure for public input on the budget process. He <br /> said he welcomes public input. <br /> I . City Manager Mike Oliver. said a significant number of earthquake- <br /> preparation programs have been enacted by the City Council in the last <br /> few years. He said staff will give an overview at a Work Session on <br /> those programs and a look into the future on things that will be coming <br /> up. <br />
