Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 6, 1994 Page - 17 -
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
He said people along Bancroft Avenue are happy with what has
happened, and Walgreen's is a good project for the location, as
long as the issues that have been raised are dealt with.
Liza Sysesky, 337 Woodland Avenue, said some other development,
such as a Barnes & Noble, a Pete's Coffee, or an up-scale
restaurant, should go in and would receive tremendous support for
development.
Dana Johnson, Farrelly Drive, said a stop light at Haas would
make it easier to get onto East 14th; it would increase traffic.
He said he resented previous statements regarding low-income
people. He said Walgreen's would undercut the competition, and
the City would lose other stores. He said he was not in support
of this project and asked the City Council to deny approval .
Betty Tsukamoto, 35 Oakes, said she went door to door with girls
who were distributing the neighborhood's questionnaires, and 85%
of the residents did not know anything about Walgreen's. She
said the vast majority of neighbors had crime stories to tell .
She said many crimes are not reported to the Police, and
increased traffic will increase crime. She said some sort of
office use, such as dental , law, or architectural offices, should
be considered.
John Klein, 66 Cambridge Avenue, said East 14th Street is a
difficult street to work with. He said Walgreen's offers an
example of what can be done to begin to bring other uses into the
area. He said there would always be impacts, but he felt
mitigations would allow them to find a solution.
Tee Karowa, 14570 East 14th Street, said CEQA requires that all
actions conform to their rules. She said the highest priority is
to protect the environment. She described various reasons why an
Environmental Impact Report should be prepared on this project.
Scott Grubbs, 13475 Bancroft Avenue, noted Drug Barn and Rexall
Pharmacy had been in San Leandro but were now gone. He said a
high-scale business like a restaurant should go in at this site.
Ellen Geis, said years ago there were 12 family drug stores in
San Leandro, but when Long's came in, they closed. She said
another drug store is not needed. She said the City should
consider the impact this will have on the residents close to the
site.
