A. Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - October 10, 1994 Page - 2 -
NEW BUSINESS (continued)
Mayor Corbett asked if each of the Council Members individually
endorses the Measure.
Council Member Perry said she personally endorses the Measure but does
not feel the City Council as a body should take a position on this type
of issue.
Council Member Polvorosa said he endorses it, but homeowners
associations in his district do not, and he must honor their position.
Council Member Loeffler said the City Council should be thinking about
the children of the community, and someone must speak for their needs.
Mayor Corbett said she stands fully behind the Measure and is concerned
that the City Council must take care of the children, compete with
schools in other communities, and retain and attract business to San
Leandro, which this Measure would help do.
The following Motion was then introduced:
Minute Order No. 94-44, Matter of Resolution Supporting School Bond
Measure D (supports bond measure to renovate and upgrade facilities in
the San Leandro Unified School District) . (1968/1102)
On motion by Council Member Galvan, who moved its approval , seconded by
Council Member Polvorosa, and carried by a majority vote (5) , with
Mayor Corbett and Council Member Loeffler voting no, the City Council
tabled the Resolution.
6. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
A. Council Member Meyers said everyone on the Council supports the
Measure, but they do not feel they should support it as a body because
they each have constituents who oppose it.
B. Council Member Loeffler said he is disappointed in the position taken
by his colleagues. He feels the opportunity to invest in the schools
exists this year. City Council support of the Measure would give a
strong message to the community and to people considering relocating in
San Leandro of the value the City Council places on our schools and
that we are making our schools a priority.
C. Coucil Member Kerr said he supports the measure personally but has some
concern because he does not get to vote on it and it puts him in an
awkward position. He said he represents everyone in San Leandro. He
hopes it passes and thinks it will set a pattern for other school
districts. He will do everything he can to help it get passed.
