Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - November 7, 1994 Page - 4 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued)
D. Joyce Rutledge, 474 Dolores Avenue, thanked the individual members of
the City Council for their support of Measure D, the School Bond issue.
She said the campaign process for the Measure has brought the community
together and revitalized community spirit. She said the tragic murder
which occurred was a wake-up call that we need to defend our community
and keep our children and schools safe.
E. Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, asked who's going to pay and how
much is it going to cost. He said San Leandro's biggest problem is
selling homes, not buying them. He said all the City needs to do is
enforce a number of existing laws, which he named. He said the City
Council has ignored the principles of the Brown Act, and he quoted a
number of sections from the Government Code. He spoke regarding a
letter to the newspaper from Council Member Galvan regarding the Board
of Supervisors' race.
F. Joel DeWitt, 1458 - 138th Avenue, spoke regarding crime. He said crime
affects everyone, and he and his family have been victims of crime. He
said people are living in fear, and he feels something should be done.
G. Lavern Anderson, 1495 - 159th Avenue, said he lives in the Ashland area
but represents the Bonaire Civic League and owns a home in San Leandro.
He said he is opposed to the system which does not allow him to vote
for Measure D, even though he pays taxes on a home. He thanked Council
Member Myers for attending the International Dinner. He also spoke
regarding the recent fire in the hills and said it took 28 minutes for
the Alameda County Fire Department to respond.
Mike Oliver, City Manager, said this was not correct, and documentation
exists to verify the true response.
Council Member Galvan said the response took 6 minutes.
Mr. Oliver agreed with Mr. Anderson that the Daily Review does not
print the news correctly. He noted the headlines regarding the recent
murder were also incorrect. He said people should know that they
cannot believe what they read in the newspaper.
H. Stephanie Lee, Information Services Manager, made a presentation,
carried over from Work Session, regarding telecommunications issues and
recommended the City Council adopt the two Resolutions on its Agenda.
