Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 16, 1992 Page - 6 - PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued) Ms. Scilley said the process on Mrs. Niemeyer's property began in January 1989. She said it was hard to inspect the property because they could not always get access, court dates changed, and it was hard to find a contractor willing to perform the work once they had a court order. Ms. Scilley said, due to staff intervention, there were some savings. She said she and Bob Lundstrom from the Fire Department worked with Mrs. Lundstrom on removing the combustibles when it was clear that this was upsetting to Mrs. Niemeyer. She said this saved approximately $1 ,500 of work that would otherwise have been done by the contractor. Alexander Finn, said he noted the contractor cost was $6,940. He said he was concerned about that, and he wanted to try to help Mrs. Niemeyer in any way that he could. Council Member Faria moved to approve the Resolution. Council Member Santos asked for an amendment of the Resolution to cut the administrative costs, which he felt were too high. He said he felt the charge should be cut to $10,000. There was no second to this motion. Council Member Glaze seconded the original motion by Council Member Faria. Council Member Perry noted that, if the administrative charges are cut now, it would set a precedent, and said she felt the Ordinance needed to be followed. Steve Meyers said the charges are consistent with the City's Ordinance. He said the City Council could change the charges if they wished to, but they should give staff direction about what they should do in other similar situations that arise. Council Member Santos said he felt the City had to be compassionate on occasion. He said he didn't think Mrs. Niemeyer understood she had violated the Ordinance or that she understood the consequences of her actions. He said he thinks the City Council has every right to act on . any given situation.
