Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 20, 1992 Page - 2 - <br /> PRESENTATIONS (continued) <br /> Thanks were also expressed to Ms. Pennebaker and her sponsors on behalf <br /> of Congressman Pete Stark. <br /> Mayor Karp presented Commendations from the City of San Leandro to <br /> Bonnie Pennebaker, Bruce Hennings, Jeff McGallian, and Chris Miller. <br /> He noted Ms. Pennebaker had presided over the Key Club Convention, <br /> which was attended by more than 2,200 high school students. He said <br /> the support of Ms. Pennebaker's sponsors is an example of volunteerism <br /> at its highest and best when groups pitch in and help students. <br /> Ms. Pennebaker thanked everyone for the honor. She expressed thanks to <br /> her advisor and the Kiwanis and said the Key Club is hard at work in <br /> the community. <br /> C. Proclamation Supporting "Save the Bay" on Earth Day. <br /> Tomi Kinsey, Administrative Aide, Public Works Services Department, <br /> noted the work that is being done under the Alameda County Urban Clean <br /> Water Program to clean up the Bay, local creeks, and water supplies. <br /> She said it is hoped educational events will help promote awareness of <br /> what people can do to help clean up the Bay and surrounding creeks. <br /> Mayor Karp thanked Ms. Kinsey. He noted that in the 50's the Bay was <br /> terribly polluted. He said since 1957 water pollution control plants <br /> treat sewage to remove contaminants, boats can no longer dump directly <br /> into the Bay, and a number of other measures have been taken as a <br /> result of the Clean Water Act. He said you can now see barnacles <br /> growing in the Bay because the Bay has been cleaned up substantially. <br /> He said pesticides coming in from the Delta are still a problem. <br /> D. Proclamation Declaring Week of April 20, 1992, "Voter Registration <br /> Week. " <br /> Mayor Karp read the Proclamation. He noted the turnout in San <br /> Leandro's Election was only 24% and was only 18% in Hayward. He said <br /> this is not acceptable, and he encouraged everyone to pitch in and get <br /> people registered and, particularly, to vote. <br /> 5. PUBLIC COMMENTS <br /> A. Mayor Karp noted the Public Hearing on the Robert's Landing matter was <br /> closed. <br /> B. Dan Henriques, 2441 Kilkare Road, Sunol „ noted literature he had given <br /> to the City Council . He said it is the City Council 's responsibility <br /> to set examples for children to follow. He said it is time for <br /> everyone to begin viewing the Bay Area as a living organism. He said <br /> 40% of the Bay and 95% of the wetlands are being destroyed and the <br />
