Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - May 18, 1992 Page - 2 -
PUBLIC COMMENTS (continued)
Mayor Karp noted a San Leandro Times article which said the Sentinels
is made up of developers; and he said The Times had printed a
retraction.
Council Member Faria said in prior elections the Sentinel -backed
candidates lost, and this shows contributions do not always have
anything to do with winning. He said, as a former chairman of the
Sentinels, he disagreed with Mr. Kaplan's comments. He said he felt
the people of San Leandro elect the Council ; the Sentinels do not elect
the Council .
Mayor Karp suggested Mr. Kaplan look at the Sentinels' records in the
past when then gave large amounts of money to candidates who lost. The
Mayor noted that he ran for Council in 1986 and was supported by a lot
of groups, but not by the Sentinels, and he won. He said the Sentinels
supported Don McGue. Mayor Karp said it isn't the amount of money;
it's the effort the candidate puts into his campaign. He said
candidates must roll up their sleeves and get out into the community in
order to get elected. He said knocking on doors results in smaller
contributions, but those are what help a candidate get elected.
Council Member Faria noted when Council Member Suchman was elected he
spent less than $800 on his campaign. He noted that the members of the
Sentinels have been involved in San Leandro for a number of years. He
said they are not bad people, and they do a lot of things for the
community, not just giving money to candidates.
Mayor Karp noted that if limitations were required on all PAC's this
would include others groups, such as the Police and Fire group, the
Sierra Club, etc.
B. Rick and Pam Richards, 335 Peralta Avenue, said there would be a Walk
for the Alzheimer's Association on October 3, 1992, beginning at 9:00
a.m. , at the Marina, and encouraged the City Council and the audience
to get involved and to contribute. Mr. Richards asked Mayor Karp to
come to the walk and welcome the participants. He said it is hoped
many people from outside the area will participate in the Walk.
Mayor Karp noted that Alzheimer's is one of the most dreaded diseases
and is traumatic for families.
Mrs. Richards noted that monies raised from the Walk will remain in the
Bay Area.
