Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - June 15, 1992 Page - 25 - <br /> 9. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> A. Council Member Myers complimented staff on both the Shoreline Run and <br /> the Cherry Festival . He said this year's Festival was the best yet. <br /> B. Council Member Corbett thanked staff for the many hours of volunteer <br /> time involved in the East 14th Street arch dedication. <br /> C. Council Member Corbett said the Cherry Festival went off very well and <br /> everyone had a good time. She said the amount of coordination involved <br /> is remarkable and thanked staff for all their work. <br /> D. Council Member Kerr said public participation in the budget process is <br /> necessary, especially if the State cuts $4 million. He said the City <br /> will either have to cut services or raise taxes. He said we need to <br /> involve people and need their expertise and advice. <br /> E. Council Member Polvorosa commended the Recreation Department for great <br /> work on the Cherry Festival . He noted that a Town Hall meeting would <br /> be held on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church on <br /> Manor Blvd. regarding the Floresta and Williams overpass closures. He <br /> said Assemblyman Klehs and Caltrans would make presentations. <br /> F. Council Member Perry said the Shoreline Run and the Cherry Festival are <br /> getting better and better. <br /> G. Council Member Perry said the East Bay Division of the League of <br /> California Cities, along with the Mayors Conference, is pursuing the <br /> State budget. She encouraged people to put pressure on the State to <br /> take responsibility for its actions. She said the State is taking <br /> funds away from cities because it can't balance its own budget. She <br /> said a $4 million cut means cuts in Police and Fire services or <br /> assessments. She urged people to support the cities and make the State <br /> take responsibility for itself. <br /> H. Council Member Faria said the signal timing at Beatrice and Washington <br /> has been modified and traffic at the intersection is greatly improved. <br /> He also expressed thanks for the Cherry Festival and said it was well <br /> done. <br /> I . Mayor Karp congratulated the Cherry Festival Corporation. He said, <br /> unlike the festivals in other cities, the Cherry Festival not only does <br /> not cost the taxpayers anything, it makes money. He said it made <br /> $5,000 this year. He said it is great to put on something like this <br /> for the community that does not cost the community anything. He <br /> thanked Martin Francis for the Flag Day ceremony. He also thanked <br /> staff for their work. He thanked Janet Mohr for all her hard work. <br /> J. Mayor Karp said the State does not have the guts to clean up its own • <br /> house. He said the many bills for studies, etc. , approved by the State <br /> are costly. He said there are many loopholes in bills and the costs <br /> are catching up with the State. He said the State has been taking <br /> money out of cities' pockets for a number of years. He said it is <br />
