He said everyone he's spoken to
feels the plan deserves a try and requested an opportunity to let the
plan work. The Mayor thanked him for all his work and effort.
Greg Gordon, President, and Ken Pon, Treasurer, San Leandro Soccer
Club, said over 100 adults and their young soccer players were at the
Council meeting to support the proposal for a sports complex. He said
there are no soccer fields now, only two permanent soccer posts,
neither of which is usable due to gophers and overuse. He said more
than 580 children have signed up for San Leandro Soccer, and they are
currently playing on baseball fields or other non-soccer fields. He
urged the City Council and School District to support San Leandro
soccer for youth. Mayor Karp said Physics International and SavMart
have donated to soccer clubs. He said it is really up to the School
Board to take action and suggested that the Soccer Club talk to them.
Mr. Gordon said he is interested in getting something in writing.
Mayor Karp suggested that he work with Recreation-Human Resources
Director Smith. He noted that many industries and businesses are
interested in getting involved.
Dr. Katz asked what the procedure would be to determine if his proposal
will be accepted. Mayor Karp directed that he contact the City
Manager.
Lou Filipovich, 15376 Laverne Drive, discussed the Resolution Amending
the Budget on the City Council Agenda. He said the City Council does
not represent every tax payer in San Leandro. He requested that
Council rewrite the agenda description to remove the phrase " . . .to
offset the budget imbalance due to State reduction in property taxes
and less-than-projected revenue in property tax, sales tax, and utility
tax due to current economic trends. " He said many taxpayers are not
privy to what goes on in the City and do not have an opportunity to get
all the facts, read the budget, and suggest what should or should not
be done. He said he supports the proposal to get the community
involved, if it isn't smoke and mirrors. He discussed a meeting with
Congressman Stark and said things will be bad after election.
Milton Hare, 541 Maud Avenue, expressed his feeling about the
importance of sports and soccer. He said he thinks land should be
reserved for sports in general . He said his children have spent 15
years in soccer, and he thinks sports activities are not emphasized the
way they should in terms of long-range planning. He said the John Muir
fields have been a serious problem for years. He said he has talked to
people in the City and on the School Board and feels a solution should
be developed between them. He said a lot of land is being utilized for
retail development, there is a shrinking land bank, and sports
shouldn't have land taken away, even for development of other
facilities. He said more people would be involved in soccer if there
