Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - December 21, 1992 Page - 14 -
CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS (continued)
•
•
F. Council Member Polvorosa said people have concerns about inadequate
lighting and dark spots at Greenhouse Marketplace. He said the area
off Floresta Boulevard is also poorly lit, as well as the area around
Cost Less.
G. Council Member Perry discussed a League of California Cities Meeting
she and a number of City Managers attended on Life After the State
Budget. She said strategic options were discussed, but the situation
is very depressing. She said the State is concerned with cities last.
She said cities and schools must form coalitions. She said building-
industry lobbyists discussed partnership strategies and said cities
must survive. She said she will distribute a report in a couple of
weeks.
H. Council Member Perry commended Pat McClellan and Bill McCammon for
their quick action after the earthquake. She said information was
immediately available on Radio 1610 and said it was comforting to know
the system does work.
I . Council Member Perry noted that more than 250 children attended the
Santa Claus program at the Library and said the Friends of the Library
gave watches to all the children. She wished everyone a Happy Holiday.
J. Council Member Faria wished everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year. He said he appreciated the update on the earthquake. He said
the quake was very strong and warned everyone to make their
preparations for the big earthquake.
K. Council Member Perry said a co-worker on Marlowe Drive said the San
Leandro Fire Department contacted the Oakland Department to remind
Oakland to have someone check chimneys after the quake.
L. Mayor Karp wished everyone Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year.
He noted there are two types of earthquakes. He said there is a
preliminary "P" shake, where there's an adjustment, followed by an "S"
that is the rolling movement. He said this quake did not involve an
"S, " but is an indication of what to expect if a 7 or 7.5 hits. Mayor
Karp noted that San Leandro was also hit by a funnel cloud that damaged
a fence, blew shingles off a roof, and broke a tree limb.
M. Mayor Karp noted with sadness the recent death of Rose Castro.
