Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - February 19, 1991 Page - 9 -
9. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
A. Council Member Corbett noted she had received calls from merchants in
the north area of San Leandro who wanted American flags put on poles in
their area. She said, thanks to Mr. Harder, this would be possible, and
expressed her appreciation.
B. Council Member Corbett noted that a committee, appointed by the
President, has been established to determine which Federal military bases
should be closed, and Alameda Naval Air Station is still on the list.
She said the members of the committee are primarily from the east coast.
She said closure of the Air Station could have substantial impact,
including unemployment, closure of schools, etc. , and encouraged everyone
to get in touch with their local Congressman. Mayor Karp noted that the
Governor is working on getting a Californian appointed to the committee.
C. Council Member Perry noted the number of flags and yellow ribbons being
displayed in San Leandro is growing day by day, and many families of
service people who are involved in the war are very appreciative of this
evidence of support for their loved ones.
D. Mayor Karp noted there is also a possibility that Oak Knoll Hospital and
the Oakland Army Base will be closed, and this will have a major impact
on the Bay Area. He said the Alameda Naval Air Station and the Army Base
are the largest, single employers in the East Bay. He said the Air
Station land is contaminated and will cost $1 billion to restore, so the
property will probably be "mothballed" and not reused or turned over to
local agencies.
E. Mayor Karp noted that he had received a number of petitions objecting
to a Payless Drug Store in the Estudillo Center at Estudillo Avenue and
MacArthur Boulevard and asked the City Council 's concurrence to forward
the petitions to the Planning Department staff. It was noted that the
petitions were actually addressed to Matt Brooks, the developer of the
property. It was further noted that permits would be needed for the
only in the event of substantial modifications to the existing
Y 9
use or buildings, and that no proposal had been submitted to the City
yet.
10. ADJOURN
The meeting was adjourned at 9:35 p.m. to February 25, 1991 .
APPROVED:
AVE KARP
Mayor of the City of San Leandro
Attest: 4---1616‘(-7—/ -
Alice Calvert, City Clerk
F:\CLERK\MINUTES\021991
