The City Council said youth
agencies needed to be represented. Council Member Santos said the
committee must be broad based or it would not work.
Mayor Karp reiterated that the item on the Agenda was approval of
formation of the committee in concept and membership would be negotiable.
The City Council agreed time is crucial , something needs to be done this
year so solutions are prepared for the next school year, and it is
important to move forward as quickly as possible.
Mr. Lievore said he would like to submit his recommendations and specific
reasons for those recommendations to the City Council and School Board
Members who would be setting up the committee. He again said he felt
the committee must be small in order to be workable.
Robert Leigh, President of the Washington Homeowners Association, said
he supports the concept and asked that the committee consider inclusion
of faculty representatives from Arroyo and Washington Manor as well as
a student representative from Redwood Christian School .
Council Member Glaze noted that, although as much input as possible is
desired, the emphasis is to appoint members and then to use other people
as resources. He said additional members can be added to the committee
as needed.
Ellen Geis, President of Estudillo Homeowners Association, said she has
not seen City Council Members attending School Board Meetings. She said
the problem with the schools is that they are autonomous and nobody's
watching the store. She said groups which have been created to date to
deal with problems have not achieved anything. She said once things calm
down the groups dissolve. She said property values for homes are going
down because we do not have good schools. She said she does favor the
concept of the proposed committee and that it should be comprised of
experienced people but should not be unwieldy, and recommended that it
have no more than 20-25 people. She said the schools should be ready
to start the new semester with discipline and safety.
Barbara Naylor, 14397 Cypress Street, said she was on the original
parents' task force, which was a large group. She said the group is now
down to three. She said there are still threats to students and her
daughter has been injured. She said she is thankful to the City Council
for proposing this group.
Shelly Perreira, said she had come to the City Council Meeting for a
Government project but wished to say she felt it was wrong not to have
students on the committee. She said the students who attend the school
know what's going on and feel the pressure in the schools. She said it
was important that focus also be put on the good points of the schools
