Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - April 15, 1991 Page - 14 - <br /> 10. CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS <br /> A. Mayor Karp said he had spent five days in Washington, D.C. , convincing <br /> congressmen to leave the Reworks Center and the Alameda Naval Air Station <br /> open and felt that the effort had been successful . <br /> B. Mayor Karp said he testified regarding the Federal gas tax. He said two- <br /> and-one-half cents was supposed to go to deficit reduction and two-and- <br /> one-half cents to public transit. He said that is not the case. All <br /> of those funds have been going to deficit reduction. <br /> C. Mayor Karp also said he testified regarding moving the City's Small Boat <br /> Launching Ramp and felt funding would be available to take care of the <br /> inner harbor dredging in the future. <br /> D. Council Member Santos said he had attended an East Bay League Meeting. <br /> He said there are efforts under way to repeal SB 2557. He said although <br /> SB 203 is leading the way there are problems with that bill and <br /> redevelopment fees could increase as a result. He said if SB 2557 is <br /> repealed, cities will probably still have to pay one year's worth of <br /> costs for 1990-91 . <br /> E. Council Member Santos spoke regarding Al Gillock and said Mr. Gillock <br /> always had the City at heart and he had a special feeling for the Bonaire <br /> area. Council Members Santos recommended that the island with the sign <br /> at Merced Street be named Gillock's Island. <br /> F. Council Member Santos spoke regarding Supervisor Santana and said Mr. <br /> Santana was at the forefront of politics and would be sorely missed. <br /> G. Council Member Corbett said she agreed with Council Member Santos' salute <br /> to Mr. Gillock. She said he was involved in the community and cared <br /> enough to attend City Council Meetings. <br /> H. Council Member Glaze said he agreed with these sentiments and said Mr. <br /> Gillock had participated in the homeowners association, Flood Control <br /> Zone 9, and was a real fighter for the Bonaire area, for parks, and for <br /> San Leandro in general . <br /> I . Council Member Glaze noted that his Seventh Annual Town Hall Meeting <br /> would be held on Monday, April 29, 1991, at 7:00 p.m. at the Washington <br /> Manor School . <br /> J. Council Member Polvorosa said Mr. Gillock had the City at heart, he was <br /> a likeable person who worked hard and would be sorely missed. <br /> K. Council Member Perry said Mr. Gillock was one of the first people she <br /> met when she was a Recreation Leader and she would miss him very much. <br /> L. Council Member Perry said Supervisor Santana always did what he felt was <br /> right for the community and you always knew where he stood. <br /> M. Council Member Perry said she would be a "pinch reader" on <br /> Wednesday,April 17, for Storytelling Hour at the Library in recognition <br /> of National Library Week. <br />
