The following people spoke regarding the Motion Regarding Appointment
of a San Leandro Partnership for Youth Safety Committee.
Barbara Naylor, 14397 Cypress Street, said she had addressed the City
Council previously regarding the City's schools. She said the City
Council responded immediately by prompting the formation of an advisory
committee on youth. She thanked the City Council for getting people's
concerns heard. She said she hopes the community will send the message
to young people that the community cares about young people's concerns
and safety.
Richard Collins, 558 Joaquin Avenue, said he is a parent of three
children at San Leandro High School and one at Bancroft Middle School ,
and said he is speaking on behalf of students and parents. He said he
is concerned about the safety of children and teachers. He said a safe
school environment is essential . He said he expects immediate action
from community officials to end violence in the schools and that this
problem needs to be whipped quickly. He said he did not feel the San
Leandro Partnership for Youth Safety Committee, as proposed, can do this
effectively. He said there were too many people on the committee, its
mission was too vague, and its title was wrong. He said the problem is
one of student and school safety and urged that the committee be named
the San Leandro School Safety Committee and made recommendations for its
representation.
Mayor Karp said he felt Mr. Collins' proposal for membership on the
committee was different from that presented by Mr. Collins at the last
City Council Meeting.
