Minutes - San Leandro City Council Meeting - September 16, 1991 Page - 15 -
11 . CITY COUNCIL COMMENTS
A. Council Member Santos noted a letter from the Oakland Chamber of
Commerce regarding the Oakland International Airport. He said, since
he lives in the west end of town, he can testify to the fact that, on
occasion, the Port of Oakland and the Airport have not been good
neighbors as far as their utilization of Stage 2 Aircraft. He said it
behooves the Port to attempt to be a good neighbor to the people who
live in San Leandro adjacent to the Airport. He said people in the area
have had their houses shaken in the middle of the night by loud
aircraft. He noted the San Francisco International Airport had recently
reached an agreement with the local home owners to soundproof their
structures. He said he feels further dialogue should be opened with
the Airport in an effort to help mitigate the noise problems and noise
pollution. He specifically said there are twin-engine planes that pass
over his area between 2:30 and 3:00 a.m. , as well as a 727 at 3:00 a.m.
Mayor Karp suggested that the City Council meet with the Manager of the
Port Authority and the Airport.
Council Member Santos agreed with this proposal and requested that Larry
Norry be invited to sit in on the Work Session.
B. Council Member Corbett said she was glad staff had held a public meeting
on September 12 related to the Davis Street/San Leandro Boulevard
improvements and would like a report on the results of the meeting.
C. Council Member Corbett noted that the Pavement Management Program is
going ahead very well . She said she has not received any complaints
on this matter. She asked how long the sweeping would go on after the
actual cape sealing.
Bill Silva, City Engineer, explained that there are four sweepings after
the gravel is laid and that the slurry will go on within five working
days of the chip seal .
D. Council Member Glaze noted that he had not received a single complaint
call this year regarding the Pavement Management Program.
E. Council Member Perry said she was glad to see the post cards in the
Newsletter and asked that copies of the responses be given to City
Council .
F. Council Member Perry noted that Saturday, September 21, is Kids' Day.
She said she would like to see the Kids' Safety Program reactivated.
G. Mayor Karp noted that the work on Davis Street and San Leandro Boulevard
is coming along very well and offered his congratulations on the work
that had been done from East 14th Street to San Leandro Boulevard. He
said the work was done at night and had been completed in a couple of
days and was a good job.
