File Number: 14-030
a. 15 - Doolittle @ 1.3 miles: $104,000
b. 17 - Merced @ 1.0 mile: $80,000
c. 30 - Davis @ 1.5 miles: $30,000
d. 21 - Alvarado @ 0.5 miles: $10,000
Total Project Cost: $224,000
"We Make Things" Marketing Campaign ($50,000): To build upon San Leandro's existing
industrial clusters, the Study recommends a targeted marketing campaign to showcase the
businesses featured in the Next Generation Workplace District study area. This involves
development and execution of a creative, story -telling approach to marketing these
businesses and San Leandro's industrial area. In addition to supporting existing companies, a
successful marketing campaign can draw attention to industrial clusters, boosting efforts to
attract new businesses that desire to locate near related companies or their supply chains.
Ideas include:
(1) In partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, generate media interest through
creation of San Leandro by Design events designed to bring businesses together in
ways that are fun and connect people ($25,000);
(2) Active participation in National Manufacturing Week with tours/open houses at
participating San Leandro manufacturing businesses; and
(3) Publication of a San Leandro "We Make Things" pullout in the San Francisco Business
Times, showcasing San Leandro's manufacturing ecosystem ($25,000).
Pop -Up Restaurants ($200,000): Temporary restaurants can provide immediate food
services. This program could provide start-up funding for development of a pop-up restaurant
installation, potentially using shipping containers, with multiple businesses providing gourmet
meals. Funds could be used for real estate, infrastructure improvements (such as connections
to gas, water, and electrical), outdoor seating, umbrellas, bike parking and other softening
features to create a comfortable space. It may be necessary for the City to contract or partner
with a mobile food/pop-up restaurant operator. Should funding not be available for this
alternative, mobile food trucks provide a lower cost alternative for bringing increased food
options to the area.
Marina Boulevard Streetscape Improvements ($50,000): Marina Boulevard is considered
part of the "spine" of the industrial area and will serve as the primary link between the Kaiser
Medical Center and the future shoreline development. This project will ultimately improve the
appearance of this heavily used street and provide a welcoming entrance to the shoreline
area. $50,000 in funding is recommended for the development of 30% design drawings of
streetscape improvements including monument signs, accent paving, sidewalks, bike lanes,
street trees, street lighting and landscaping. Additional funding for design and construction is
included in the City's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and a determination on funding will be
made as part of the ongoing CIP process.
Energy Efficient LED Lighting Program: Improved lighting for pedestrians and cyclists will
help to make the industrial areas more appealing to businesses and workers. Staff is
exploring opportunities to create an energy efficient lighting program, with zero capital outlay
from the City. This program will pay for itself in energy savings over time, and continue to
reduce energy costs to the City once paid for. Public Works will be issuing an RFP to select a
firm to develop and construct recommended energy efficiencies and improvements, including
City of San Leandro Page 4 Printed on 2/412014
