<br /> <br />3.1.2 Environmental Services <br /> <br />The City of San Leandro's Environmental Services <br />Division is a full service environmental agency <br />serving the community of San Leandro. The <br />division is one of a handful of agencies in California <br />to oversee such a broad range of environmental <br />programs at the local level. The Environmental <br />Services Division takes pride in serving as a one- <br />stop environmental contact point for the city's residents and businesses. <br /> <br />The Environmental Division is responsible for <br /> Contaminated Site Cleanup - overseeing the cleanup and remediation of <br />contaminated sites within San Leandro. <br /> Hazardous Materials - regulating the storage, use and disposal of hazardous <br />materials and hazardous wastes above and below ground. <br /> Recycling - promoting recycling, pollution prevention and waste reduction <br />programs. <br /> Refuse - overseeing the city's refuse collection program. <br /> Sewer/Pretreatment - monitoring and regulating discharges of wastewater <br />into the City's sanitary sewer system. <br /> Site Information & Review - maintaining and making available files and <br />information about businesses that handle hazardous materials and <br />contaminated sites. <br /> Storm Water Program - safeguarding the City's storm water system through <br />regular inspections, and responding to reports of spills and illegal discharges <br />of hazardous materials or other potentially harmful substances <br /> <br />3.1.3 Earthquake Retrofit Programs <br /> <br />The City of San Leandro includes earthquake safety as one of the top priorities in its <br />public safety mission. There are currently two retrofit programs in effect within the <br />city. One program addresses the seismic strengthening of older unreinforced <br />masonry buildings, while the other program addresses the strengthening of older <br />wood-frame homes.
