41 <br />ARTIST AND ARTWORK SELECTION <br />ARTIST SELECTION GOALS <br />The overarching goal of artist selection is to acquire artwork of the highest <br />quality. Success depends on selecting an artist whose skill, experience, style, <br />commitment to collaboration and community facilitation skills match the project’s <br />needs. The specific goals of the selection process are to: <br />• Encourage the highest level of creative engagement and vibrant thinking <br />in creating free-standing or site-integrated artworks; <br />• Select an artist or artists whose existing public artworks or past <br />collaborative efforts have maintained a high level of quality and integrity; <br />• Further the mission and goals of the Arts and Culture Program and the <br />City; <br />• Identify the optimal approach to public art that is suitable to the <br />demands of the particular project; <br />• Select an artist or artists who will best respond to the distinctive <br />characteristics of the site and the community it serves; <br />• Select an artist or artists who can work successfully as members of an <br />overall project design team; and <br />• Ensure that the selection process represents and considers the interests <br />of all parties concerned, including the public, the arts community and the <br />City. <br />“ Success depends on selecting an <br />artist whose skill, experience, style, <br />commitment to collaboration and <br />community facilitation skills match <br />the project’s needs.” <br />52
