130 ~ CiTY OF SAN LEANDRO BiCYCLE & PEDESTRiAN MASTER PLAN <br />the northwest corner to the southwest corner of Bancroft Avenue and <br />Estudillo Avenue. To better accommodate this movement, new signals and <br />a pedestrian scramble, similar to the one installed at Bancroft Avenue and <br />136th Avenue near San Leandro High School should be considered for this <br />intersection. <br />14. East 14th Street/San Leandro Boulevard Intersection: Pedestrian refuge <br />islands should be installed in association with the existing central medians <br />on East 14th Street. Curb extensions with compliant curb ramps should <br />be implemented at all corners of the intersection dependent upon the <br />available space. The City should analyze the feasibility of removing the <br />free right turn lane onto San Leandro Boulevard from East 14th Street and <br />replace it with a widened sidewalk and a standard corner treatment. <br />15. San Leandro High School and 136th Avenue/Bancroft Avenue: These <br />locations are extremely important crossings because this is a key location <br />for students traveling between the San Leandro High School main campus <br />and the new Korematsu Campus. At 136th Avenue/Bancroft Avenue, the Afternoon dismissal at Bancroft Middle School: students crossing Bancroft Avenue at Estudillo <br />Avenue. <br />The existing mid-block crossing in front of the main San Leandro High campus. <br />12. McKinley Elementary School: A traffic signal with pedestrian activation <br />is located at the intersection of East 14th Street and Estabrook Street <br />in front of McKinley Elementary School. School Warning signage <br />should be placed in advance of the crosswalk and School Crosswalk <br />Warning signs should be placed adjacent to the crosswalk. At the <br />intersection of East 14th Street and Blossom Way, a Rectangular <br />Rapid Flashing Beacon should be installed at the northwest crossing <br />across East 14th. For the full recommendation plan, see Appendix G. <br />The City recently installed a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) <br />at the Bancroft Avenue/Blossom Way intersection. To further improve <br />safety to McKinley Elementary School (and San Leandro High), a yellow <br />high visibility pedestrian crossing with School Warning signage in advance <br />of the crosswalk and School Crosswalk Warning signs adjacent to the <br />crosswalk should be implemented at the intersection of Bancroft Avenue <br />and Warren Avenue. <br />13. Bancroft Middle School: During the school site assessment at Bancroft <br />Middle, it was observed that a high volume of students wish to move from <br />268
