February 24, 2022

Walter Passmore, State Urban Forester
Resource Protection and Improvement
CAL FIRE
P.O. Box 944246
Sacramento, CA 94244-2460

Hi Walter,

Thank you for your questions on the grant application as approved.

The tree distribution program and planting goals are reasonable, achievable and have
reasonable strategy in place. For the two year span of the grant, we will distribute 4,000 seedlings
annually and hold in reserve 1,000 seedlings annually to grow in community and school based
nursery programs for planting in the final year of the grant. Approximately 2,500 street trees
annually will be planted in vacant lots, medians, priority neighborhoods with low tree canopy and/or
high urban heat impact, parks, and open spaces, as well as direct request by property owners. The
city will be utilizing science-driven ESRI assessment to determine wildlife corridors for planting and
providing well water and reclaimed water for 100K Trees for watering.

The tree distribution program will be executed through community outreach and partnerships with
the more than 150 identified community groups and organizations, including San Leandro Unified
School District and San Lorenzo Unified School District, which has school sites within San
Leandro. This also includes distribution through our 50 identified local environmental, bike walk,
scouts, Sierra Club, creek and waterway groups, faith, health care, elders, unhoused and labor
organizations. Overall an average of 25 seedlings per organization will be distributed.

The 10,000 trees (seedlings) are matched as fundraised by high school students. Students plan
to raise $10,000 via direct solicitation fundraising to individuals in their communities. Students
solicit $10 per donor to support planting trees in San Leandro. Each student goal is 10 donations
for $100 total. One hundred students raising $100 from 10 donors each will raise $10,000. $10,000
purchases 10,000 trees from tree partner Arbor Day Foundation. (see slide).
