r <br />t' City Council <br />Page 2 <br />April 22, 1999 <br />Safe Moves is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving children's lives through education. Since its <br />inception, Safe Moves has provided over two million children of Southern California each year, and <br />thousands more in Northern California, with the knowledge and skills they need to safely travel the streets <br />and sidewalks of their neighborhoods as bicyclists, pedestrians, skateboarders, and passengers in cars, <br />trains and buses. The organization conducts interactive pedestrian safety rodeos and educational <br />presentations that are geared specifically for all segments of the community. <br />Safe Moves has been credited with dramatically decreasing traffic accidents in targeted populations and has <br />won accolades and endorsements from health organizations, law enforcement agencies, school boards, <br />PTAs and government officials. In addition, Safe Moves was selected as the 1993 Safety Professional of <br />the Year by the California Safety Center. Safe Moves recently received the California Cities Helen <br />Putnum Award for Child Transportation Safety. <br />Over the past 14 years, Safe Moves has grown into one of the leading authorities on bicycle and pedestrian <br />safety education for children and adults. <br />Fiscal Impact <br />The cost of the awarding this contract to Safe Moves is $28,100.00 Development fees for Street <br />Improvement (DFSI) Funds have been set -aside in the Fiscal Year 1998-99 Approved Budget for <br />the Safe Moves contract. <br />CONCLUSION <br />This report recommends that the City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute <br />an agreement with Safe Moves to provide the continuation of the Pedestrian Safety Program. It is <br />recommended that a Contractual Services Agreement be approved with Safe Moves to provide Elementary <br />School workshops, Community -based Traffic Rodeos and Senior Citizen Traffic Safety Presentations. <br />WKA:RED:RS:cw <br />G:mcord\counci1\MAY 03\Safe Moves.mem <br />
