STANDARDS FOR DIRECTIONAL SIGNS <br />Purpose: <br />• To provide a uniform directional sign program to direct residents and visitors to <br />important destinations within the City such as business, commercial and retail <br />districts, recreational facilities, shopping centers and malls, religious institutions, <br />government facilities and similar destinations that have a local or regional draw. <br />To avoid "sign pollution" through the limited and careful placement of signs within <br />the City. <br />Directional signs shall be permitted within the public right-of-way in accordance <br />with the following standards: <br />• Directional signs shall be permitted for business, commercial and retail districts, <br />recreational facilities, shopping centers and malls, religious institutions, government <br />facilities and similar destinations that have a local or regional draw. <br />• The Development Services Department shall make a finding for each application that <br />the directional sign will benefit the public good. <br />• An encroachment permit shall be required. <br />• When evaluating a sign application, staff will conduct afield investigation of the <br />vicinity and take action to reduce signage through the elimination and consolidation <br />of signs whenever possible. <br />• Whenever possible, an existing directional sign pole, street name sign post, signal <br />pole or light pole shall be used. <br />• The number of signs per pole shall be limited to avoid a "totem pole " appearance. <br />• The applicant shall submit a written request for the sign stating the desired location(s) <br />and the text to appear on the sign. The request shall be subject to the approval of the <br />Development Services and Engineering and Transpiration Departments. <br />• The number of signs permitted shall be limited to the minimum number needed for <br />clear directions to the site as determined by the Development Services and <br />Engineering and Transportation Departments. <br />• The total number of signs shall not exceed two for any one site, except in cases where <br />three signs are required to provide clear direction. <br />215 <br />
