John Jermanis 2 02/25/98
informational, directional and warning signs. Staff will evaluate existing signage, develop
installation criteria and recommend modifications to existing signage in the City.
In the interim, staff has revised the proposed directional sign policy to address the City Council's
concerns regarding sign clutter. Staff has added a statement to the policy, making it clear that it is
the City's goal to avoid "sign pollution" through the limited and careful placement of signs within
the City. The revised policy also states that staff will conduct a field investigation for each
application and reduce signs in the vicinity through elimination or consolidation wherever possible.
The number of signs per pole shall be limited to avoid a "totem pole" appearance. The total
number of signs has been reduced from three to two for any one site, except in cases where three
signs are required for clear direction. The revised directional sign policy is attached and the
changes have been highlighted.
The Council also expressed interest in knowing the proposed locations for the new directional
signs. To date, the City has received requests for Bayfair Mall and Boulders Golf Center. It is
anticipated that existing church signs will be replaced. Although staff had considered installing
directional signs for the Civic Center Complex, it is recommended that the Civic Center signs be
considered as part of the comprehensive sign program.
CONCLUSION
Staff will begin working on the comprehensive sign program and will report back to the City
Council within six months. The goal of the comprehensive review will be to reduce the number of
signs throughout the City. In the meantime, staff recommends that the City Council approve the
revised directional sign policy.
214
