CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
STAFF REPORT
DATE: April 7, 1996
TO: John Jermanis, City Manager
BY: Artie A. Fields, Assistant to the City Manager
VIA: Wandzia Grycz, Assistant City Manager
SUBJECT: Vision Document - Theme Statements
SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION
APPROVED AND FORWARDED
TO CITY COUNCIL
Jo J rmanis
ger
On April 7, 1997, the City Council has on its agenda a discussion of the City Council Vision
Statements for the City of San Leandro. City staff recommends approval of the document as
presented.
BACKGROUND
The City Council met at a work session in December 1996 to identify and discuss goals and
objectives for the City's future. The discussion was a collaborative process that allowed input
from City staff and the public. The meeting was very productive and presented an opportunity for
the City Council to develop a "wish list" of items that were deemed essential to provide a quality
environment for residents and businesses alike. At the conclusion of that meeting the City
Council had laid the foundation for the development of what would later be referred to as the
City's "Vision Statements."
A follow-up meeting was scheduled in January 1997 to further discuss and refine the Vision
Statements. This meeting was also very productive and provided a forum for the City Council to
review the new City Manager recruitment process. The Vision Statements were incorporated
into the discussion and assisted the City Council in identifying the characteristics that the
successful candidate should posses.
DISCUSSION
Staff recommends that the Vision Statements be utilized to form the basic work plan for the
development of the Fiscal Year 1997-98 budget. If approved, the Vision Statements would be
included in the budget document and highlighted by each department.
- 163
