changes in employment. Published data summarize these employment changes for each
county. Typically, the EDD provides at least a two -digit SIC code level of detail. The
EDD publishes these data, along with 5-year county employment projections. as part of its
Projections and Planning Information series. Reports are prepared for each CountN. and
often contain useful information regarding significant changes in local economic activities,
trends affecting regional and countywide employment, and wage and labor -force
information. Increasingly, EDD is making its data available via its on-line bulletin board
system and/or by floppy diskette.
Annual Reports from Local Publicly Traded Companies. The City may find it useful to
obtain and review annual reports published by local companies that are publicly traded.
particularly companies that have been targeted for retention or expansion. These reports
may contain useful information about industry trends, and the outlook for the company
within its industry. however, information specific to local operations may be limited.
Real Estate Brokerage Reports. Large regional real estate brokerages publish these
reports quarterly or annually. Typically, these reports review real estate market trends and
conditions and summarize significant developments within the region, with detailed
information at the sub -market level. Data are tracked separately for office, retail, and
industrial properties. This information, which includes asking rental rates, absorption data.
and ne\ construction data can be useful in evaluating the performance of the local real
estate market in comparison to the larger region. and often contains information about
significant new projects that will compete with local developments.
Regional and National Economic Development Organizations. Maintaining
membership in regional Vc-
and national'economic development organizations is an important
means of keeping up-to-date on economic trends. Organizations such as Alameda CountN
Economic Development Advisor% Board (EDAB), California Association for Local
Economic Development (CALED). National Center for Urban Economic Development
(CUED), and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) periodically commission studies of relevance
to their members. and also highlight studies completed b, others in their periodic
publications. These organizations are also good sources of information regarding best
practices in operating economic development programs.
City Business License Data. Cite business license data are a local source of information
that should be developed and utilized to the extent possible. Annual business license
renewal data can be used to track the growth or decline of sales for local businesses over
time. The Ciry should use these data as a method of screening local businesses for targeted
outreach in retention/expansion programs. By tracking businesses with increasing sales
over time. the Cite can anticipate expansion needs. and make contact with businesses at an
earl stage to make sure the Cit\ has every opportunity to help its successful businesses -ec
grox% locally, as opposed to relocating.
