A <br />City Council - 4 - June 25, 1997 <br />banking, legal, and freight forwarding sectors, identify upcoming trade missions to markets of <br />interest to San Leandro businesses, and to further refine the City's data with regard to local <br />businesses and their current trading activities. <br />Implementation and Monitoring of Strategy Recommendations <br />Several recommendations in the Strategy discuss continuing already successful economic <br />development programs such as the successful City -Chamber Visitation Program, the one -stop <br />permit center, broker outreach and the Economic Development Breakfast. Many more new <br />recommendations have been made by the Strategy and at City Council direction staff is already <br />working to implement those recommendations. In order to be successful the Strategy must be <br />rigorously implemented, monitored, and updated as conditions in the market place change. <br />Included on the June 30 agenda for City Council review and approval is a contract for developing <br />a marketing strategy and identity for the City, one of the key recommendations included in the <br />Improving Community Life program area and in the Council's vision statements. Additional <br />projects to be forwarded to the City Council for review and approval include further analysis of <br />San Leandro's key business sectors, analysis of the City's sales tax in the critical business to <br />business category, development of a plan to upgrade San Leandro's neighborhood commercial <br />shopping centers, and development of Downtown design guidelines. <br />CONCLUSION <br />The City Council has shown considerable foresight in undertaking a comprehensive strategic <br />economic planning effort. After thoughtful preparation and input from Bay Area Economics and <br />key community stakeholders, the EDAC and staff recommend City Council adopt the Economic <br />Development Strategy as presented. <br />Attachments: Exhibit A, Economic Development Strategy Programs Survey <br />Economic Development Strategy <br />G: \Dept\Transfer\Nanci.
