City Council - 3 - June 25, 1997 <br />• Youth Advisory Committee(YAQ - Staff met with the YAC to review the Strategy and hear <br />input first hand from San Leandro's youth leaders. Eighteen YAC members attended the <br />meeting and actively engaged in asking questions about the Strategy. YAC members were <br />very well informed about current economic development issues and felt strongly about the <br />impact of the economy on area youth. <br />• Main Library - A general meeting was held at the Main Library. Eight members of the <br />community came to listen to a report on the Strategy, ask questions, and give input. The <br />participants generally supported the recommendations made in the strategy and appreciated <br />being asked for their input. <br />• Marina Community Center (MCC) - A general meeting was held at the MCC. Five <br />community members attended and were generally supportive of the strategies outlined in the <br />document. <br />• San Leandro School Board - BAE and staff representatives made a brief presentation to the <br />School Board and answered questions about the Strategy. In general, the School Board was <br />pleased that the City Council and the EDAC placed a premium on education within the <br />Strategy; and that the City continues to demonstrate a commitment to coordination with the <br />schools. Specific comments by School Board members included requests to work closely <br />together on the development of the City's marketing program and web page as well as careful <br />attention to any City activities that may impact school district property. School Board <br />members also noted the important connection between the School District and the local real <br />estate community and appreciated the City's recent efforts to facilitate linkages between the <br />two groups. <br />• San Lorenzo School Board - BAE and staff representatives made a brief presentation to the <br />School Board and answered questions about the Strategy. The School Board was very <br />pleased that the City of San Leandro has very actively included the concerns of the residents <br />and School Board of San Lorenzo. In particular Board members noted that the District's <br />school configuration will likely change and that three San Lorenzo schools, not just two will <br />serve San Leandro residents. Board members also noted their satisfaction and appreciation <br />for the San Leandro Police Department which provides the District with excellent police <br />protection. <br />Foreign Trade Element <br />The City Council has taken a proactive approach to foreign trade recognizing that foreign trade <br />brings additional jobs and wealth in the community. City staff working with the Chamber and <br />the Greater Oakland International Trade Office(GOITC) has already held one successful <br />workshop for local businesses identifying critical issues and resources needed to begin or <br />increase local trade activity. As described in the Strategy staff will work to continue to provide <br />resources such as education about developing trade to local businesses, find key resources in the <br />
