CITY OF SAN LEANDRO
STAFF REPORT
Date:
To:
From:
September 8, 1997
City Council
APPROVED AND
FORWARDED
TO CITY COUNCIL
John,.. Jermanis
CityManager
Steven A. Harman, Human Resources Director ,L(
Subject: Resolution to Amend the Pay Plan to Create the Classification of Tree Trimmer
II; Retitle the Classification of Tree Trimmer to Tree Trimmer I; Request to Add
a New Park Maintenance Worker I position to the Landscape Maintenance
Section of the Public Works Services Department.
SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council approve a resolution creating a new classification of
Tree Trimmer II at a salary range of $3,123 - 3,279 - 3,443 - 3,615 - 3,796 per month; retitle the
classification of Tree Trimmer to Tree Trimmer I; and approve the addition of one new Park
Maintenance Worker I position in the Landscape Maintenance Section of the Public Works
Services Department, with the position to be assigned to the City's tree crew operation.
BACKGROUND
The demand for tree trimming services has increased dramatically over the past three years due
to the planting of over one thousand street trees throughout the City. In order to meet the
demand for increased three trimming maintenance and planting of trees on City streets in
accordance with City policy, particularly in residential areas throughout San Leandro, the Public
Works Services Director has re-evaluated the organization of tree crews with the goal of
increasing crew flexibility and responsiveness to meet the public's need for service.
Presently, the tree crews consist of three (3) Tree Trimmers receiving a 5% differential for the
additional duties of the lead worker assignment, and two (2) Tree Trimmers. The Public Works
Services Director proposes the creation of a new classification of Tree Trimmer II, which will be
responsible for performing lead work on a tree crew, and adding a new Park Maintenance
Worker I position that would be assigned to the tree crew. This would result in having three tree
crews assigned throughout the City's residential areas to provide the full range of tree care and
maintenance services.
95
