1. Street tree planting, park tree planting, and school tree planting
These elements are ready to proceed as soon as funds are available and volunteers are
solicited.
2. Hesperian Boulevard Median Tree Planting
Minimal design is necessary for this project so construction can start as
allowed by the weather.
3. Doolittle Drive Tree Planting
Tree planting at this location will require careful design to avoid damage to
underground communication and utility infrastructure. It is anticipated that
this process would require retaining a private landscape architect and it is
anticipated that this process would take six months. It is also anticipated that
the bid process would take several months and that construction could take
three to six months.
VU. Project Category Criteria
A. SUSTAINABLTTY AND SUITABILITY
This project will provide the maximum benefits over the long term by utilizing a
majority of plantings that after establishment will thrive without the need for
supplemental irrigation.
1. Suitability of Tree Species
The variety of trees proposed have been selected specifically for their drought tolerance
and their adaptability to the City of San Leandro's environment. Tree management
decisions are made based on environmental constraints of potential planting sites,
climate and soil factors. Trees for park and school sites will focus on existing trees
species that have performed well on or in the vicinity of the sites.
Street tree selections are based on many different factors. The selection of tree sites and
species reflect the following information.
a. Vacant Site Information
Site information that effects planting includes size of the planting area/cutout, and
presence or absence of obstructions. Obstructions are further categorized according to
the presence or absence of underground and overhead utilities as well as obstructions
due to buildings or privately owned trees. This project will increase tree growth by
addressing one of the limiting factors, the size of the planting area by allowing for tree
pit enlargement.
Page 7
