number of school sites where tree planting is highly desirable (For a list of
locations see Exhibit L). Opportunities exist for planting large stature shade
and buffer trees. The School District plans to involve the schools' PTAs and
Parent Clubs
4. Hesperian Boulevard Median Tree Planting - This project calls for installing
groupings of 43 evergreen and deciduous trees and an automatic bubbler
irrigation system in the median between Highway 238 and Highway 185.
Hesperian Boulevard has been identified as a primary thoroughfare that
announces entry into the City of San Leandro. This thoroughfare is given a
high priority for streetscape improvements due to its high visibility and
importance. Specifically, the Plan calls for using large and medium canopy
trees.
Doolittle Drive Tree Planting — This project calls for installing 38 trees along
Doolittle Drive with an automatic bubbler irrigation system. Doolittle Drive
has been identified as a major gateway into the City of San Leandro,
especially for visitors from the Oakland Airport. This thoroughfare is given a
high priority for streetscape improvements due to its high visibility and
importance. Specifically, the Plan calls for using large and canopy trees on the
east side of the street and palm trees on the west side of the street..
B. STATEWIDE PROJECT GOALS AND LOCAL CASH CONTRIBUTIONS
Urban tree planting has been identified by the Governor of California as a major priority.
This project which plant 652 trees is consistent with that priority.
The Doolittle Drive planting element of this proposal is one part of a joint effort by the
City of Oakland, the City of San Leandro, the Port of Oakland, and the Alameda County
Transportation Authority to develop streetscapes that can be adopted for the major streets
in the Airport Gateway Area.
Although there is matching, in -kind services for this project, a suitable local cash
contribution has not been identified.
C. PROJECT READINESS
The 1-880 widening project is completed. No obstacles such as permits or environmental
clearances, other than a Caltrans encroachment permit, are required. The proposed
project is exempt from the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act.
Exhibits D and E detail the proposed project schedule. Outlined below is the status of the
specific projects.
Page 6
