OTHER BENEFITS AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
1. Education and Community Outreach Program
24
City staff will hold elementary school presentations on the importance of urban
trees. These presentations will be followed by tree planting in the public right-of-
way, in a nearby park, or on school grounds. Information will be distributed on
the City of San Leandro's urban forestry program.
City staff will also work with established local neighborhood groups within San
Leandro. These groups will be called on to assist in the current grant project.
Volunteers will be solicited to act as neighborhood leaders for each block or area
to be planted. These leaders will visit each household in their respective areas to
inform people about planned planting, and to generate maximum support for the
effort. Before each planting day, City staff will visit school sites within the
neighborhood of the planned planting project where a presentation explaining the
benefits of urban trees including their positive effects on the environment, energy
conservation and property values will be given. On each planting day, City
Landscape personnel will provide planting instructions to the volunteer group
assigned to the area.
Each participating group will "adopt" the trees they plant and look out for their
Page 10
