welfare. In addition, City staff will monitor the progress of the trees in order to
determine maintenance needs.
2. Design, Recreational and Scenic Values
The proposed urban forestry project represents a multi -faceted collaborative effort
among several public agencies to improve the quality of life for San Leandro
residents through tree planting at highly visible public sites. The value of the
project far exceeds the obvious environmental benefits related to improving air
quality.
The street trees proposed along the arterial street, Hesperian Boulevard and
Doolittle Drive, will enhance the streetscape and moderate the large expanse of
roadway paving.
Neighborhood street tree planting has been strongly endorsed by the community,
as documented in the MacArthur Estudillo Gateway Plan, for improving
neighborhood appearance and creating a distinctive unifying theme along key
collector streets. Residents have requested trees with attractive foliage or flowers.
The large trees targeted for park and school sites will have multiple aesthetic
benefits including: providing shade, buffering adjacent land uses and walls;
enhancing picnic and seating areas; and upgrading the appearance of the park and
school grounds.
VIII.
