IN THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LEANDRO <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2002- 16 9 (112 3 ) <br />RESOLUTION SUPPORTING EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IN SAN LEANDRO AND <br />ELIMINATING THE USE OF THE TERM "MINORITY" IN <br />CITY OF SAN LEANDRO PROGRAMS, SERVICES, DOCUMENTS AND OPERATIONS <br />WHEREAS, certain references to African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, Native <br />Americans and others as "minorities" have conveyed negative connotations that imply inequity among <br />Americans; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro celebrates the rich history of all Americans, and <br />acknowledges the positive contributions to American society that all ethnic groups have made; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro has taken initiatives to promote equal opportunities for <br />Americans, regardless of ethnicity; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro supports building communities where fairness and <br />equality of opportunity are upheld. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, the San Leandro City Council does resolve as follows: <br />That wherever possible the City of San Leandro will discontinue the use of the term <br />"minority" in reference to any citizen or ethnic group. <br />That the use of this term shall not be prohibited if necessary for obtaining state or federal <br />funding or complying with state or federal law; and <br />That the inadvertent use of this term shall not invalidate any City action. <br />Introduced by Council Member Loeffler <br />Dec. , 2002, by the following called vote: <br />Members of the Council: <br />and passed and adopted this 9th day of <br />AYES: Council Members Badger, Glaze, Grant, Loeffler, Nardine, Santos; <br />Mayor Young ( 7 ) <br />NOES: None ( 0 ) <br />ABSENT: None <br />ATTEST: <br />Marian Handa, City Clerk <br />( 0 ) <br />
