Maltester
Mayor of San Leandro
San Leandro, California -
Dear Mayor Maltester:
We express our appreciation to you and the Councilmen of the City
of San Leandro and the other interested citizens of San Leandro in
meeting with the Eden Hospital Building Committee on Saturday,
May 6, 1972.
The following is a review of Eden Hospital's Modernization Program:
Eden Hospital is now more than twenty-two years old, counting the
time of its original planning and design. Medical advances, services
and treatment, have changed the use of hospitals by todays standards.
This is the most important reason for our program. Another reason
is that the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, in the
inspection, stated that " 1. Corridors should be kept free of obstruc-
tions", and, "Z. More space is needed for x-ray, laboratory and
medical records."
We began as early as 1966 in attempting to keep pace with changes
and when we established the Coronary Care Unit it vas obvious that
much more than minor alterations would be needed to meet the
growing demands.
In 1968 the Board undertook a preliminary study of the needs of the
various services including establishing a full-time, twenty-four hour
emergency service. The study noted the increasing use of outpatient
services, including radiology, clinical laboratory, emergency and
physical therapy. There began a series of meetings with physicians
of the specialized services and department heads, and the possibility
of establishing a Cardiac Care Unit on the First Floor adjacent to the
existing Emergency Department in a ne,.ti-1y-constructed building.
After much deliberation and study, it was decided that this location
would impede any enlargement of the Emergency Department and could
impair the growth of radiology and clinical laboratory.
