DAVIS STREET
SAN LEANDRO, CA. 94577
"San Leandro ... Home of Sunshine and Flowers"
(415) 351-1431
February 3, 1972
CITY ATTORNEYS O iCE
FEB 8 - 1972
CITY OF AN LEANDRO
San Leandro City Council
San Leandro City Hall
San Leandro, California
Gentlemen:
The San Leandro Chamber of Commerce tax committee was
assigned the job of determining what happened when taxpayers of
Eden Township suddenly found their taxes for the Eden Township
Hospital District tax rate jumped from S.006 to 91.205. San Leandro,
as all of know, is in Eden Township and our city's assessment
of nearly $300,000.,000 is 41% of the district's total assessed
evaluation of $726,151,829. In other words, San Leandrans are
paying 41% of the hospital bill.
The committee went to work immediately, making an
effort to get hospital representatives to explain the proposed
hospital expansion at a general Chamber meeting. The hospital
refused to do this. Then followed a series of efforts to meet
with the hospital board, all of which were unsuccessful until
the Tuesday immediately preceeding Thanksgiving. However, the
hospital board did not see fit to answer nine questions which
were presented, stating they would refer them to their attorney
for answers. Answers were eventually received by mail which
the committee went over carefully; in some cases the answers
were very brief and sketchy, and the committee submitted
additional questions to get clarification. The next communi-
cation from the hospital said, if effect, if you want more
information, it will be necessary to come to the hospital to
dig it out.
In the meantime, the committee determined that for
general hospital purposes, San Leandro's two hospitals are able
to handle the city's medical needs. In addition, many
San Leandrans are members of the Kaiser Hospital Plan or go to
ACCREDITED
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
C....EN OE COAI.ENCE
0E THE UNITED STATES
