WRT | RFP No. 60149: San Leandro Comprehensive Parks Master Plan 50
Hayward Unified School District
STEAM Buildings Design
Hayward, CA
Hayward High School (HHS), Tennyson High School (THS), and Mount Eden High School
(MEHS) Science Technology Engineering Art & Math (STEAM) Building landscapes are
similarly programmed but unique to each school. At all locations, the landscape is a series
of outdoor rooms which support learning. The Front Porch at the entry lobby is designed
to accommodate students and the community. An outdoor maker space, overlook passive
study and lunch area, sequence of flexible outdoor classrooms, cistern, and seating hubs at
circulation intersections complete the general programming. The entire space is designed
to be a canvas for various installations, art, and experiments. At HHS, the front porch is
separated from the parking lot by a swale and bridge that collects adjacent storm water,
intended to evoke Sulphur Creek. A garden and expanded orchard remnant reflect the Farmer
mascot, and an amphitheater focuses on views to the west. At the edge of the THS campus,
the thriving Farm community garden is now connected to the heart of the school, and the
landscape stitches together the Lancer’s campus by providing an alley processional to the
new football stadium. To support MEHS Monarch’s focus on arts, the landscape includes a
sculpture garden space, flexible open areas for dance, theater and art projects, and a direct
connection to the surrounding community to provide exposure and facilitate interaction.
