tolerant, appropriate for the space in terms of full growth pattern, low maintenance and <br />less p an equivalent unless otherwise instructed by the City. <br /> <br />(d) As part of plant replacement, the Contractor shall amend the soil with compost and/or <br />mulch. In addition, the Contractor shall perform checks/repairs of irrigation systems in <br />combination with the plant replacement to ensure that the plants have enough water while <br />being established. Replacements should not occur when watering is restricted due to <br />excessive drought conditions. <br /> <br />(e) New plants that are replaced will be the responsibility of the Contractor. This includes <br />plant material damaged or destroyed as a result of transplant shock, lack of water, <br />inadequate care, or inappropriate use of pesticides or fertilizers. All such replacements <br />shall be considered part of the bid price and no reimbursement will be provided. <br /> <br />307 Composting and Mulching - Extra Work – On Call – As Needed- PreApproval by <br /> City <br /> <br />(a) The City is subject to state regulations (14 CCR 18993.1) regarding the purchase and use <br />of compost and mulch in landscaping operations. <br /> <br />(b) Contractor shall provide pricing to apply compost and/or mulch at all locations at least <br />one time per year for soil amendment and weed control. <br /> <br />(c) Compost must be produced at a permitted composting facility. Digestate, biosolids, <br />manure are not acceptable substitutes. Mulch must be derived from organic materials and <br />be produced at a permitted transfer station, landfill, or composting facility. Material from <br />a chip and grind facility, tree trimmings generated from City or Contractor maintenance <br />activities, bark mulch, and tire mulch shall not be used. Acceptable sources of compost <br />and mulch can be found at www.lawntogarden.org/marketplace or <br />www.compostingcouncil.org/page/participants <br /> <br />(d) Guidelines for mulch applications: <br />i) Contractor shall maintain a minimum of 3” of coarse, recycled mulch at all times <br />over surface of all non-turf planting areas (9 cubic yards per 1,000 square feet of <br />area). <br />ii) Mulch shall be kept 6” away from tree trunks and away from shrub stems. <br />iii) Mulch shall be applied so that it is below grade (curb, edging, etc.) by half an <br />inch. Some additional grading preparation and grading of areas adjacent to <br />sidewalks or edging, etc. may be required to keep the finish grade of the mulch at <br />an appropriate level. <br />iv) Non-porous material (e.g. plastic weed barriers) shall not be placed under the <br />mulch.
