San Leandro Creek <br /> <br />San Leandro Creek is a nearly22-mile-long stream t hat begins i n the de n se ly forested h i l ls east of Oaklan d and <br />outflows into San Leandro Bay. Along the way it f lows t h rough t he City of San Leand ro fo r 2.1 m il es a n d forms <br />the border between San Leandro and the Ci t y of Oakland for anothe r 7.8 mi les. <br />While most urban st rea ms in th e East Bay have been h eavily channel ized a nd cu lverted, <br />San Leandro Creek is one of the r a re few tha t remains uncovered. As su ch, San Leand ro <br />Creek is a val u able na t ural resource to the community and th ere are ongo i ng efforts, such <br />as the work of the nonprofit Fr iends of San Leandro Creek, to restore and enhance the <br />environmental, recreational, and cultural va lue of t he creek. <br />San Leandro Creek is also a source of concern in the context of urban forest ma na gement. The native oaks and <br />willows tha t historically lined the creek have been supplanted by in vas ive eucalyptus trees. T he large <br />eucalyptus trees have da ma ged i nfrastruct u re. T h e manageme n t of the t rees a long San Lea nd ro Creek is <br />currently a j urisd ictional gray area and these trees were not incl uded i n the 2022 i nventory.
