Continued Discussion of Renovation/Relocation of Burrell Field
City Manager Jermanis referred to the previous discussions about the condition and
maintenance of Burrell Field and joint-use concept, and that only six nighttime games are
played at the site per year. The SLHS Pirates are the only high school team using Burrell
Field at this time. He commented on the desire to free up the land for other uses. He
presented two alternative site design concepts which would allow for approximately seven
acres of land to be developed. He distributed diagrams for discussion purposes. He also
suggested other ideas to consider such as renovating the high school field and then playing
the sip night games elsewhere (e.g., Chabot College). Another concept would be to work
jointly with SLzUSD to share a renovated facility that all three high schools could use. He
stated that resources for both the City and the School District are limited and assets need to
be used differently.
Board Member Cutter commented that the current practice of using Burrell Field for six
games still imposes a $31,000 deficit for the District. Council Member Gregory stated that
Burrell in its current state is unacceptable and suggested hosting a community charette.
