The purpose of this Green Update is
to provide an overview of the efforts that various departments are doing in order to protect the
environment, promote sustainable practices, and work to reduce the Cites greenhouse gas
emissions.
BACKGROUND
On February 5, 2007 the San Leandro City Council adopted a goal to reduce its greenhouse gas
(GHG) emission levels 25% below 2005 levels by 2020. This goal is consistent with AB 32, the
emission reduction goal established by the State of California. Using the International Council
for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Cities for Climate Protection Campaign project, the
City is currently developing programs to achieve this goal through the creation of a Climate
Action Plan (CAP). This grant pays for both the
Climate Action Intern and a portion of the Assistant to the City Managers time that was dedicated to
the CAP document as well as the development of its programs. The City completed a greenhouse
gas emissions inventory utilizing the software protocols provided by ICLEI.
As of September 2008, the CAP program is now under the supervision of Sally Banos, who is
taking on the role of Sustainability Coordinator in addition to her regular Planning and Green
Building duties. The next phase in the Sustainability project include investigating new ways to
decrease greenhouse gas emissions within the Cit}~s municipal operations, developing programs
with the Municipal Climate Protection Task Force (`Climate Task Force, and engaging with the
public on both private and public efforts for sustainability.
