CITY OF SAN LEANDRO CITY AND SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT LLAISON COMMITTEE October 16, 2008 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. San Leandro City Hall 835 East 14th Street San Leandro, California (Sister Cities Gallery) HIGHLIGHTS Committee Members Present:Mayor Tony Santos, Council Member Surlene Grant, District Board Chair Ray Davis, Board Member Lisa Hague, Board Member Pauline Cutter City Staff Present: Interim City Manager Steve Hollister, and Interim Assistant City Manager Jacqui Diaz, Recreation and Human Services Manager Micki Cronin SLUSD Staff Present: Superintendent Christine Lim, High School Facilities Manager Greg Dyer The meeting was called to order at 4:03 p.m. by Mayor Santos. 1. Presentation on Castro Valley Sports Foundation and Development of Stadium at Castro Valley High School Mayor Santos introduced the item to the committee. Martin Capron and Jennifer Oliver, founding members of the Castro Valley Sports Foundation were introduced and made the presentation to the committee. The campaign began in 2002 and the stadium was completed in 2007. There was a large grassroots effort throughout the school, parents, teachers, and larger community. They became a nonprofit organization and raised approximately $300,000 in a fairly short time. They desired a new facility for the students and others to use, but overall to attract teachers and coaches, as well as send a message that it was a value in the community. A $42 million bond was floated in 2005. Mayor Santos stated that this could be a possible concept for replacing Burrell Field and suggested the presentation be taken to the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Capron stated that it was a very grassroots effort and that it might also work in San Leandro; he offered any support to tell others how to organize.
