Discussion Regarding Local Tobacco Control Policies <br />Community Relations Representative Kathy Ornelas gave a summary of the Committee's <br />discussion on this topic at the last meeting, and requested direction from the Committee <br />regarding what local tobacco control policies it wished to pursue. Ms. Ornelas stated that the <br />City's current smoking ordinance should be rescinded, as its provisions have been superseded <br />by the passage of stricter state law. Ms. Ornelas outlined some possible options, noting that <br />some cities have gone as far as restricting smoking in all public places, including public streets <br />and sidewalks. <br />Committee members expressed interest in pursuing local tobacco control policies. Chair <br />Santos inquired about regulations for multi-unit housing, commenting that he has received <br />calls from interested members of the public about such regulations. Interim Police Chief Ian <br />Willis was asked about the difficulty of enforcing smoking regulations in multi-unit housing. <br />Chief Willis indicated that it would depend on how aggressively the City wanted the <br />regulations enforced. <br />
