Discussion Regarding Naming of Bay Trail Slough Bridge in Honor of Bill Lockyer
Ms. Ornelas reviewed the information contained in the staff report on the naming of the Bay
Trail Bridge, which was built in partnership with several public agencies, but will be owned and
maintained by the City. It is recommended that the bridge be named the "Bill Lockyer Bay Trail
Bridge." While serving as a State Senator, Bill Lockyer authored Senate Bill 100, authorizing
the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) to develop the plan for the San Francisco
Bay Trail.
Committee members discussed the current Administrative Code policy for naming/renaming
facilities, and its applicability to this situation. Ms. Ornelas pointed out that the policy allows this
type of recognition in the case of "a living prominent citizen whose accomplishments and
contributions to the community clearly demonstrate a commitment over and beyond what would
be normally associated with the performance of their work."
