Discussion Regarding Parking Regulations for Oversized Vehicles
This matter was referred to the Rules and Communications Committee after the issue was
raised by resident Tom Saunders at a recent City Council meeting. City Manager Steve
Hollister outlined the City's current oversized vehicle regulations. Community Relations
Representative Kathy Ornelas reported that staff met to discuss modifying the current local
regulations, which allows oversized vehicles an exemption to park three times per year on
public streets for a 72 -hour period, with a possible 72 -hour extension. She provided the
Committee with proposed changes to the ordinance. Staff recommends that the number of
exemptions allowed be increased to once per calendar month. The parking regulations are
legally required to be posted, and staff recommends that signs be posted at the City limits.
Mr. Saunders commented on the issues he has encountered in attempting to park his
recreational vehicle (RV) in compliance with the current regulations. He requested that the
City's ordinance be changed to allow 72 -hour parking without the 2 -6 a.m. restriction, just as
all other passenger vehicles are allowed to do.
