Continued Discussion Regarding Parking Regulations for Oversized Vehicles
This matter was continued from the October 26 Committee meeting. The current local
parking regulations allow oversized vehicles, including recreational vehicles (RVs) an
exemption to park three times per year on public streets for a 72 -hour period.
Community Relations Representative Kathy Ornelas reported that staff recommends the
number of exemptions allowed be increased to 12 times per year, but she was unsure of the
Police Department's ability to issue the permits and perform the recordkeeping to track these
exemptions. Police Chief Ian Willis indicated that tracking these permits should not be a
problem. Sergeant Randall Hudson described the current permit tracking process, and
reiterated that the issuance and tracking of the parking permits would not be a problem for
the Police Department.
Committee Member Stephens stated that while the City wants to accommodate the needs of
its residents who enjoy using RVs, it does not want people living in motor homes on city
streets, or oversized vehicles parked on narrow neighborhood streets. Staff members
commented on the complaints they have received from residents regarding oversized vehicles
