Hollister, City Manager City Manager
FROM: Uchenna Udemezue, Director
Engineering and Transportation D artment
BY: Kenneth Joseph, City Engineer A
Engineering and Transportation Department/
SUBJECT PROJECT/PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
RESOLUTION APPROVING PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS AND CALLING FOR BIDS
FOR STREET LIGHT UNDERGROUNDING — EAST 14 STREET (150 AVENUE TO
SOUTH CITY LIMIT), PROJECT NO. 07- 210 -38 -172.
SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION
The project provides for the replacement of 18 streetlights on East 14 Street from 150 Avenue
to Bayfair Drive and the installation of three new streetlights on East 14 Street from Bayfair
Drive to the southerly City limits.
Staff recommends approval of the plans and specifications and call for bids for the subject
project.
BACKGROUND
The master plan for the undergrounding of overhead utilities in San Leandro was created in
1992. East 14 Street was included as an underground utility street in this master plan, and in
October 1999, the City Council created an Underground Utility District (District) from 153`
Avenue to the southerly City limits. In April 2003, the District was extended northward to 150
Avenue to encompass the subject project area.
The City owns and maintains street lighting in the project area. These lights are powered by the
City's overhead wiring that connects each streetlight. It is the City's responsibility to
underground the overhead wiring serving the streetlights within the District. However, the
existing streetlight poles are in poor condition, do not meet current standards and must be
replaced.
