Report from Airport Noise Office Regarding South Field ILS Malfunction and Carrier
Arrivals at the North Field on June 8
Christian Valdez from the Airport Noise Office explained that on the morning of June 8, the
FAA was upgrading power cables to their Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the South
Field. A back -up generator was in place to provide replacement power, and that generator
failed, shutting down the system. That resulted in temporarily diverting arriving flights to the
North Field. The generator power was restored but failed again later in the day. A total of
five flights were diverted in the first ILS outage, and twenty -four during the second outage.
Wafaa Aborashed commented on the noise created in the neighborhoods by the diverted
airliners.
Chair Santos expressed concern that there was no community advisory to alert neighboring
cities as to why the flights were being diverted to the North Field. Noise Office staff agreed
to work with City staff to improve the notification system for events of this nature.
