r <br /> `• <br /> MINUTES <br /> SAN LEANDRO CITY COUNCIL MEETING <br /> MAY 18, 1992 <br /> The City Council of the City of San Leandro met in regular session in the City <br /> Council Chamber of the City Hall on the above date at 8:00 p.m. , Mayor Karp <br /> presiding. <br /> 1. CALL TO ORDER <br /> 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG <br /> 3. ROLL CALL <br /> PRESENT: Council Members Corbett, Faria, Kerr, Myers, Perry, Polvorosa; <br /> Mayor Karp <br /> ABSENT: None <br /> 4. PRESENTATIONS <br /> A. Council Member Perry said she had represented the Mayor at the Bay Area <br /> Cable TV Excellence Awards. She noted that Jerry Calarusso and Mike <br /> Smith were chosen as the winners in the area of community activities <br /> out of 500 entrants for their Christmas Flashbacks production. She <br /> said it is great to see young people exhibiting so much talent and <br /> noted that Mr. Smith is the son of Dennis Smith, the City's Recreation- <br /> Human Resources Director. <br /> Mike Smith said he appreciated getting recognition for his work. He <br /> said public access is a great way of showing the talent among the young <br /> people of the community. <br /> 5. PUBLIC COMMENTS <br /> A. John Kaplan, 1400 Carpentier Street, spoke regarding donations to City <br /> Council campaigns by the Sentinels. He said the three winning <br /> candidates in the recent election had each accepted more than $3,000 <br /> from the Sentinels, which was a total of 40% of each of the <br /> contributions they received. He said the Sentinels are a Political <br /> Action Committee registered with the Secretary of State; and they are <br /> involved, for the most part, in development and consist of developers, <br /> engineers, real estate firms, etc. He said about half of the members <br /> of the Sentinels live outside of the City. He said he feels the <br /> Sentinels have too much power in the community. <br /> Mr. Kaplan asked Council Member Kerr if he would be willing to excuse <br /> himself from voting on issues that have to do with Citation Homes and <br /> Robert' s Landing. Council Member Kerr said at the time this matter <br /> comes before the City Council he would confer with the City Attorney. <br />
