r `• MINUTES SAN LEANDRO CITY COUNCIL MEETING MAY 18, 1992 The City Council of the City of San Leandro met in regular session in the City Council Chamber of the City Hall on the above date at 8:00 p.m. , Mayor Karp presiding. 1. CALL TO ORDER 2. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG 3. ROLL CALL PRESENT: Council Members Corbett, Faria, Kerr, Myers, Perry, Polvorosa; Mayor Karp ABSENT: None 4. PRESENTATIONS A. Council Member Perry said she had represented the Mayor at the Bay Area Cable TV Excellence Awards. She noted that Jerry Calarusso and Mike Smith were chosen as the winners in the area of community activities out of 500 entrants for their Christmas Flashbacks production. She said it is great to see young people exhibiting so much talent and noted that Mr. Smith is the son of Dennis Smith, the City's Recreation- Human Resources Director. Mike Smith said he appreciated getting recognition for his work. He said public access is a great way of showing the talent among the young people of the community. 5. PUBLIC COMMENTS A. John Kaplan, 1400 Carpentier Street, spoke regarding donations to City Council campaigns by the Sentinels. He said the three winning candidates in the recent election had each accepted more than $3,000 from the Sentinels, which was a total of 40% of each of the contributions they received. He said the Sentinels are a Political Action Committee registered with the Secretary of State; and they are involved, for the most part, in development and consist of developers, engineers, real estate firms, etc. He said about half of the members of the Sentinels live outside of the City. He said he feels the Sentinels have too much power in the community. Mr. Kaplan asked Council Member Kerr if he would be willing to excuse himself from voting on issues that have to do with Citation Homes and Robert' s Landing. Council Member Kerr said at the time this matter comes before the City Council he would confer with the City Attorney.
